Taking control of your health: for artists.
You know all too well the good and the bad of the performing arts demanding more than just talent-
It requires your consistent peak physical conditioning. And i’m not just talking to the dancers here, singers who perform on stage, stunt artists, actors, street performers: you ALL know exactly what I’m talking about.
I remember a short film I did last year; my character had about 6 different running scenes (a morning run, a sprint to the bus she was about to miss, then the classic: running away from someone sketchy through 4 different streets), and they decided to film all the running scenes on the same day for logistical reasons - so I had a good 6-8 hour day of running and sprinting, which I actually loved, but probably would have loved a lot more if I wasn’t wearing an assortment of shoes that were NOT made for running!!)
So, whether you're a dancer, actor, or musician: the right fitness program can do wonders for enhancing your performance, preventing injuries, and boosting your confidence - meaning your fitness ability won’t get in the way of your creative choices!
The Importance of Physical Conditioning
As an artist, you often face unique physical challenges (queue the above running story!). You need stamina during long rehearsals or performances, and the flexibility (mental and physical!) to execute demanding routines. A well-rounded and personalized fitness program addresses these needs; meaning you can perform at your best without distraction.
The best part is: this will look very different for each performer. While my life involves acting, singing, and dancing, I also have a long, sucky list of chronic health conditions that means my fitness program will look extremely different week to week pending my health and medical recommendations: but fun fact, your health shouldn’t (or doesn’t have to) limit your ability. I had to learn how to really listen to my body, and know when it was time to push, and when it was time to stop (even if that looked like months of stopping).
Fun fact: Most personal trainers I’ve met have had extremely difficult or long journeys with their own health, which is what got them into the field in the first place. So if you’re struggling, reach out to someone and you’ll absolutely find someone who can relate and help you thrive. If you get stuck, reach out to us and we can either help you or point you in the direction of someone perfect.
Customized Fitness Plans
A tailored fitness plan for performing artists typically includes functional strength training and core stability, flexibility routines to improve movement fluidity, and cardio workouts to build your endurance. This holistic approach not only enhances your physical capabilities but also helps you avoid common injuries associated with rigorous activity (and helps your brain switch on in all the best ways).
Keeping your physical fitness up also increases your mental stamina which means you’ll have more energy to do the things you love: whether that’s going over choreography, running lines, or staying focused and engaged for those late nights on set or stage.
We offer affordable, personalized fitness plans based on your career, lifestyle and goals - reach out to us for more details, and your own plan! Details HERE :)
Incorporating Recovery and Mindfulness
Recovery is just as crucial as training. Incorporating rest days, stretching, and mindfulness practices like yoga (and bluey snacks) can improve your overall well-being. This can help reduce stress and keep you mentally sharp, allowing you to focus fully on your craft. (Legit though, bluey snacks (along with ACTUAL good protein and fruit or veg) brings me so much joy on long days, lol).
Getting Started
If you’re ready to enhance your performance through fitness, start by setting realistic goals. And let’s be clear - we’re not focusing on weight loss here - we’re talking about your capacity and ability as an artist! We’re talking about mental precision and the ability to make interesting, creative choices without being held back (think: the creativity and uniqueness of a P!nk concert!).
Consider working with a trainer (hi!!!) who specializes in the performing arts to create a program tailored to your specific needs (who saw that plug coming!?)
Taking control of your physical health is a powerful move for your performance career. It also helps reduce stress and gives you a sense of control in a sometimes chaotic industry. Always remember to be gentle with yourself: I’ll delve into more chronic-health related topics at a later stage, but for now, just remember you’re running your own race; so keep going at your own pace and you’ll be exactly where you need to be.
